Biography

Michael’s practice centers on protection, acquisition, evaluation and enforcement of intellectual property rights primarily in the biotechnology, pharmaceutical and medical device industries. He has extensive experience in a wide range of patent-related matters, including due diligence; litigation; client counselling; patent preparation and prosecution; post-grant proceedings; opinions on patent validity and infringement; and licensing. 

Trained in molecular and cell biology (B.S.), microbiology (M.S.), and human genetics (Ph.D.), he previously worked as a laboratory supervisor of the DNA Diagnostics Laboratory at Yale University School of Medicine. Michael uses his knowledge and training to assist clients in identifying valuable innovations for patenting, and obtaining and managing robust and enforceable patent protection in the United States and around the world.

In addition, Michael works with investment firms to evaluate intellectual property issues including strength of the target company’s patents and freedom-to-operate in view of third-party intellectual property. He also conducts intellectual property due diligence in the context of corporate mergers and acquisitions, technology transfer and licensing.

Before Fox Rothschild

Prior to joining Fox, Michael was an attorney at an IP boutique law firm based in New York. Before that, he worked as a legal intern at the same firm while he was attending law school.

Before law school, Michael worked at Yale University School of Medicine in the DNA Diagnostics Laboratory, designing new diagnostic tests, including tests for Canavan disease, Tay-Sachs disease and predisposition to breast cancer.

While earning his doctoral degree at the University of Michigan, Michael received a number of honors and recognitions, including the Rackham Predoctoral Fellowship and the James V. Neel Fellowship for Academic Excellence as well as a Genetics Training Grant. He was also honored with the Award for Outstanding Clinical Educator for his efforts in establishing a program in which undergraduate students in laboratory medicine completed a three-month rotation in the DNA Diagnostics Laboratory at the Yale University School of Medicine to gain experience with molecular genetics techniques.
