  • Successfully advocated for a Washington state manufacturer at a local board hearing, resulting in the refund of millions of dollars in over-assessed property taxes.
  • Advised the purchaser of a multimillion-dollar Washington business with significant intangible value on sales/use tax, real estate excise tax, and property tax considerations for the transaction. After the transaction, successfully defended against $1 million in threatened liability in a Washington Department of Revenue sales/use tax and B&O tax audit.

  • Successfully worked on behalf of a large industrial client during multiple years of rapid plant expansions to reach fair property tax values in a very complex situation.   • Achieved a large industrial client’s property tax goal by stipulation rather than by taking its appeal through a costly and uncertain hearing. The taxing authority conceded in full on the strength of pre-hearing briefing that featured industry-specific experience from the state in question and other jurisdictions with analogous precedents.
  • Obtained property tax exemptions for low-income housing projects, including large refunds for past years.
  • Secured substantial property tax refunds for a marina based on a correction of land-use data.
  • Represented the former Revel Casino recently in a settlement with Atlantic City that will see Revel’s 2015 property tax assessment reduced from $625 million to just $225 million. The immediate effect for Revel is the reduction in the amount of taxes it has to pay in its first two quarterly tax installments from nearly $10 million to $1.88 million.
  • Obtained a judgment from the Tax Court of New Jersey on behalf of the owner of the Borgata Hotel and Casino in Atlantic City, shaving $1.38 billion from the Borgata’s 2009 and 2010 assessed values. The judgment resulted in a savings for the client of $48 million plus interest for the two tax years.
