Biography
Joe is a veteran trial attorney who represents businesses and individuals in complex commercial litigation, intellectual property disputes, and defamation and First Amendment matters in federal and state courts nationwide.
With more than two decades of courtroom experience — including service as a Department of Justice trial attorney — Joe has tried cases before judges and juries, argued trial and appellate matters, and arbitrated commercial disputes across multiple jurisdictions. He is well versed in cyber-reputation issues, advising clients on the protection of brands, reputations and property from online attacks and damaging statements.
Joe also handles trademark and patent infringement cases in federal court, as well as registration disputes before the Trademark Trial and Appeal Board. He counsels clients on the strategic deployment of intellectual property to advance their business objectives.
Clients in the cybersecurity, e-commerce and communications sectors look to Joe for guidance on litigation and regulatory risk. He maintains strong relationships with digital forensics investigators, ransomware response teams and crisis communications professionals, enabling him to assemble the right resources when clients face urgent threats. Joe is the current author of The Law of Defamation in Virginia (Fifth Edition) and has been featured as a defamation litigator in articles, television and radio programs.
His client base spans government contractors, healthcare companies, technology and e-commerce businesses, manufacturers, start-up ventures, political figures, and high-net-worth individuals.

Before Fox Rothschild
Joe joined us from a national law firm where he was Chair of the Defamation and First Amendment Litigation Practice. He has practiced at law firms in the District of Columbia and Virginia, litigating local and national cases. He started his legal career in 1998 as a Trial Attorney with the Department of Justice, Tax Division, where he received the Tax Division’s Outstanding Attorney Award in 2000. Joe was hired through the Honors Program after earning his law degrees from the West Virginia University College of Law and Georgetown University Law Center.
