Biography

A skilled patent attorney, Nicholas works with leading research institutions, universities, startups, and medium and large companies on a variety of biotechnology, immunology, small molecule-molecular biology, regenerative medicine, gene editing, virology, vaccines and oncology matters.

With a doctorate in cellular Immunology/Virology and almost two decades of experience in the United States and abroad, Nicholas has written and prosecuted patent applications for several cutting-edge technologies involving:

  • CAR-T cells and CAR-NK cells

A former senior researcher with The National Institute For Communicable Diseases in South Africa who conducted postdoctoral research at Stanford Medical School and Harvard Medical School, Nicholas understands the science behind the patents he reviews. Before becoming an attorney, he researched the molecular genetics of the Ebola, Rift Valley Fever and rabies viruses. He also studied neo-natal immune responses to vaccines given to infants born to HIV-infected mothers.

Before Fox Rothschild

Prior to joining Fox Rothschild, Nicholas was special counsel at a national law firm in its Boston office. He also previously served as a partner at an international firm in its South Florida office.

Nicholas’s doctoral research focused on cellular immune recognition of pathogens and the mechanisms involved in stimulating immune responses. During his postdoctoral research at Stanford Medical School, he worked on identifying genes in the Major Histocompatibility Complex involved in autoimmune diseases. Nicholas also conducted vaccinology research at Harvard Medical School, where he used Salmonella typhimurium as a model and studied the mechanisms of the immune responses generated by different vaccine antigens. He also performed research in South Africa on the molecular genetics of the Ebola, Rift Valley Fever and rabies viruses. There, he set up the vaccinology department and studied neo-natal immune responses to vaccines given to infants born to HIV-infected mothers, for which he was awarded a Major Impact Study grant.

Additionally, Nicholas has taught immunology and virology and has presented at national and international scientific conferences. He is the recipient of prestigious grants from the the Cancer Research Institute, National Institutes of Health and the Poliomyelitis Foundation.
