Historically, a family systemic approach to addiction has defined family in this context as family of origin. Professionals across disciplines now recognize that the whole family is affected by a person's substance abuse and yet, our approach to addressing addiction continues to differentiate family from other integral players in a family's larger support network. This presentation will explore how a shift in the family system dynamic to include professional advisors within the theoretical model amplifies the capacity of the entire system to respond in more compassionate and effective ways to the presence of addiction and other behavioral health disruptions.
