Variety Highlights Darrell Miller and Marc Simon in 2023 Legal Impact Report
Fox Rothschild LLP congratulates Darrell D. Miller and Marc H. Simon, who were named to Variety’s 2023 Legal Impact Report highlighting entertainment lawyers who “score wins for their clients and make deals to keep them ahead of the curve.”
Miller, Founding Chair of the Entertainment & Sports Law Department and Managing Partner of the firm’s Los Angeles Office, is recognized for his work with long-time A-lister Angela Bassett, in starring in the upcoming Netflix film “Damsel,” and rising star comedian, Taylor Tomlinson, on her high-rated “Look at You” Netflix comedy special.
Miller’s recent work also includes deals for Da’Vine Joy Randolph for HBO series “The Idol” and Lionsgate film “Shadow Force”; Bassett Vance Productions on a re-upped deal with Viacom Studios/CBS, including release of its first film greenlit by MTV Studios, “Heist 88,” executive produced by and starring client Courtney B. Vance; and Reginald Hudlin for directing Eddie Murphy in Amazon’s “Candy Cane Lane.”
When asked about the shifting media landscape and how he is preparing his clients, Miller told Variety that, “The most successful artists and brands of today can’t just talk about what I call the immediate deal, but also how that immediate deal needs to drive multiple revenue streams.”
Simon, Chair of the Entertainment & Sports Law Department, is spotlighted for repping Joe Pesci in his first episodic streaming role in “Bupkis” on Peacock. He also advises Oscar-winning filmmaker Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy, who has been attached as director for the next “Star Wars” film and Paramount’s adaptation of “Brilliance.”
Simon’s recent work also includes advising Barack and Michelle Obama’s Higher Ground Productions; Oscar-winner Joseph Patel’s overall deal with Disney platform Onyx Collective; and iDeal Partners, Jana Edelbaum, Rachel Cohen and Sharon Chang for their documentary “Beyond Utopia,” which took the Audience Award at the 2023 Sundance Film Festival.
Simon spoke with Variety about evolving streaming platforms and noted that “creative talent and rights-holders merit contingent compensation from digital streamers, which substituted upfront buyouts that were only for a select few and in arbitrary amounts.” Streamers are also entering pay tiers, which is ideal to structure bonus pay, he added.
