CJ Fisher, Co-chair of Fox Rothschild’s Gaming Department, co-authored draft legislation on behalf of client Gaud-Hammer Gaming Group that would open the door to increased hosting of esports contests and expand esports wagering options throughout the Garden State.

New Jersey Assembly Bill A2172, which was approved unanimously by the body’s Tourism, Gaming and the Arts Committee, would establish esports-only betting licenses (i.e. skins/market access), create special protocols for hosting esports events at casinos and racetracks, and allow esports contests to take place both in-person and exclusively online.

The legislation also creates a comprehensive legal framework that acknowledges skill-based video games as a legitimate category of gambling and guarantees that all operations adhere to the state’s stringent safety regulations and gambling requirements.

The proposal’s goal is to make New Jersey a destination for competitive video gaming and associated wagering, contributing to expanded economic growth in the state.
